Application of 5G in Security Video Surveillance

From the official websites of Haikang and Dahua, there are currently no 5G surveillance cameras, but there are some 5G NVRs, DVRs, and car DVRs. This confirms our previous conclusion: At present, 5G is of little significance to the development of the security industry, and it is far inferior to technologies such as IPv6 and LTE-cat.1.

At present, the main problems in the application of 5G in the security video surveillance industry are:

1. Upstream bandwidth limitation

This is a regular question. The 5G network still has limited uplink bandwidth. The 5G network uses time-sharing transmission (different from the uplink and downlink full-duplex transmission of wired networks), 80% of the time is used to transmit downlink data, and 20% of the time is used to transmit uplink data, which means that the uplink in the 5G network Bandwidth accounts for only 20% of the total bandwidth, about 300Mbps, so the reality is not always so good. The large-scale use of 5G network transmission for video surveillance still seems undesirable, and further development of technology is needed. For example, ROI video coding technology, I frame optimization, network transmission optimization, or waiting for 6G.

2. The transmission distance of a single 5G base station is limited, and the attenuation is fast

5G transmission uses two bands of millimeter wave and Sub-6G, and the wavelength is relatively short, resulting in poor effective transmission distance, penetration, and diffraction performance. Therefore, the standby capacity and transmission distance in a single base station are limited, and the installation location and number of cameras need to be considered.

Frequency band supported by 5G surveillance camera transmission (domestic)

The built-in 5G module of the camera shall meet the following requirements:

a. The network format should support dual-mode NSA and SA networking;

b. The frequency band used by the 5G module should comply with the relevant national radio management regulations, and the module that does not support the SA mode should support the EN-DC frequency band combination. The specific frequency bands are shown in the following table;

c. 5G module operating temperature range: -30℃~ +75℃;

d. The digital cellular communication of the 5G module is enhanced. For the specific requirements of the mobile bandwidth communication protocol, see YD/T 3627-2019.
